[FLNK MAGAZINE] n.SSign INTERVIEW
n.SSign consistently brings joy to our days through their new music and stages. In their daily space, the practice room, FLNK Magazine captured another charm of n.SSign.
Q. How was the photoshoot with FLNK Magazine?
[SUNGYUN] It was new to take photos in the practice room in this mood. Since the practice room is a comfortable place where we always practice, we could naturally shoot and feel at ease. I liked it.
Q. Who was the first to come to this practice room? Please share your initial memories.
[KAZUTA] I was the first one who started practicing in this room, on April 19, 2019. I was unable to speak Korean at all, so I couldn't understand a word of what others were saying. Also, I thought like, 'Finally, I am a trainee! I'll debut here!'.
Q. Do you have any memorable episodes from the practice room?
[HUIWON] This practice room is famous for being haunted. ROBIN claims to have seen a ghost in the end room we just finished shooting.
[ROBIN] The space next to the end room is where we often go to take selfies. It has a white background and comes out brightly. During practicing in the end room, I was sitting in front of a mirror. In the reflection, I saw someone passing through the door glass. At first, I thought someone would come to take a selfie, but nobody returned. I wondered, 'Is he trying to surprise me? Maybe he’s waiting for me'. I quickly opened the door, but there was no one there, so I immediately left the room and ran away. (Laughs)
Q. When watching YouTube content, it seems like HANJUN is usually leading the dance practice.
[HANJUN] Actually, rather than saying I lead, members tend to follow my decision when we adjust the dance together. When members share opinions like "How about this? What about that?", I organize their thoughts. Also, as you know, everyone has a different body shape. So during dance practices, I guide them on the details of how each person uses their body.
[HUIWON] Also, HANJUN has a good ear for listening to the beat, so he takes care of that aspect as well.
Q. Who plays a role similar to HANJUN in vocal practice?
[HUIWON] In vocal practice, SUNGYUN hyung (the elder brother) and DOHA hyung lead us.
[SUNGYUN] I'm not a teacher, so I can't precisely instruct, "Do it like this or that". But with the knowledge I have, I guide them like, “Here's a way not to strain your throat”.
[JUNHYEOK] When recording the title track of this album, initially, hitting the high notes were challenging. There was even a suggestion to lower the key, but after receiving tips from SUNGYUN, when I re-recorded, it turned out well.
Q. You are a large group. So the choreography for each song varies according to the number of members. What is the key to mastering numerous choreographies that might be confusing?
[HANJUN] That's right. Even for the same song, we have multiple versions. For example, for <Wormhole : New Track>, we have a normal 8-9 member version, a rock version with 8-9 members, a short 4min version, a 5min 30sec version, and a version with an intro. They are all different.
[HUIWON] So, there's a lot of changes in our choreography, but we haven't found a shortcut. (laughs) I think repetition is the answer.
[SUNGYUN] Practicing until the early morning and not getting enough sleep might be the key. (laughs)
[HUIWON] Also, when we have to switch from the 9-member version to the 8-member version, it's better to completely forget the 9-member version when learning the 8-member version. It's like resetting.
[SUNGYUN] That's right. We do reset, but we shouldn't completely forget the other versions. We practice with some kind of backup somewhere.
Q. Have you discovered anything new about yourselves since debut?
[HUIWON] I learned that my right face looks better. Photos I didn’t like were always on the left side of my face.
[HANJUN] I enjoy watching my fancams. I always click the 'like' button. Also, I discovered that I have a cool undertone.
[ROBIN] I used to cover my teeth because I felt embarrassed, and it made my lip shape look strange. Now, I think I need to practice smiling widely and showing my teeth.
[SUNGYUN] During the <Wormhole> activities, I had short hair, then I’m back to long hair now. Ah, I realized that, indeed, long hair suits me well.
[LAURENCE] I think I need to study Korean more. After debuting, During interviews, recording videos, and singing a song, I realized that I’m not that good at Korean.
[EDDIE] I felt the importance of in-ear tape on the stage. We have to tape in-ear because it falls out when dancing. Since it kept falling out easily, I ended up using a lot of tape.
[JUNHYEOK] Many of our songs in this album have high notes, and I was not sure I would make it. However, as I practiced, I found that I can reach those notes. I feel like I've discovered a new path vocally.
[KAZUTA] I believe I am good at sexy performances. It's embarrassing, but... (laughs) Also, I realized that I want to do many things. I want to try acting, and I also want to be an MC.
Q. When do you feel like “We are a team”?
[HUIWON] Perhaps, on the stage. When practicing, things don't always go smoothly, so we may bicker a bit. But on stage, it feels like a moment when we share the desire to showcase what we've prepared to many people.
[KAZUTA] I felt it a lot during concerts. Preparing for a concert is not easy, so when we succeed, I think that's when we feel, 'Ah, we are a family, a team'.
Q. FLNK combines FAN and LINK, and it’s a platform that connects fans and artists. How would n.SSign like to connect with fans in the future?
[EDDIE] I enjoy chatting with fans, so I'd like to interact with them like close friends through live messaging. It's truly about connecting as one, through messages.
[JUNHYEOK] When we showcase what we've prepared together on the stage, and fans watch and respond to us, it truly feels like a connection. So by preparing even more impressive and enjoyable performances, we want to get closer to our fans and make an effort to share mutual appreciation.
